 Underwriting Opportunities at Travelers

What exactly does a Commercial Underwriter do?

Underwriters are the heart of the insurance process, gathering and researching pertinent information and then using their analytical skills to evaluate the acceptability of business and institutional risk.  Underwriters (Account Executives) are also relationship builders with our agents and clients, responsible for managing a profitable portfolio of business through our distributing agents and brokers.  An underwriting career includes a dynamic blend of analytical and personal selling skills – it's challenging, stimulating and a great career choice.

We offer two very exciting and challenging opportunities to develop your professional skills and prepare you for the role of an Account Executive.

Bond and Financial Products Underwriter Trainee Program

The Bond and Financial products’ program has two phases.  Phase one includes training on the day-to-day operations of the office, including learning the philosophy and technical aspects of underwriting, the interactions Underwriters have with business partners, the dynamics of underwriting and reviewing files as well as being involved in agency visits. You’ll be assigned to a mentor/coach as you complete self study materials about Bond & Financial Products and your Business Unit.  In Phase two, you’ll also be invited to attend a formal training session.  As a participant, you will also take part in Professional Selling Skills, personality types, business etiquette and many other helpful professional development courses. There are required presentations and demonstrations of learned skills, through case studies and account reviews.

Business Insurance Underwriting Development Program (UDP)

The UDP is a highly structured training program designed to develop you to become a business leader skilled in insurance underwriting, sales, marketing and product knowledge.  This year long multi-faceted program combines comprehensive classroom and on the job training through a planned rotational program, coupled with coaching and "hands on" instruction.   The goal of the UDP training is that the participant begins as soon as possible to manage their own underwriting territory and contribute positively to their Business Unit's plan and Travelers' overall profitability.
