Abstract: This paper shows that part of the changes in household formation patterns in the United States can be attributed to changes in the demographic composition of the population. Influential factors include the increasing proportion of elderly in the population and the aging of the baby boom generation. The proportion living alone is expected to rise, the proportion sharing quarters with unrelated persons is expected to fall, and the numbers of persons choosing each of those living styles will rise. In addition, dramatic increases in the demand for both owner-occupied and renter-occupied housing for one-person households are predicted.
