Abstract: The management of real
estate assets owned by corporations has grown in importance over the past decade. Surveys
have been published concerning the evaluation and decisionmaking in the leasing and
purchasing of corporate assets. Little research, however, has been conducted to determine
how executives finance real estate and the criteria used to make lease and purchase
decisions. This study surveyed corporate real estate executives about the sources of funds
to acquire real estate, the use and evaluation of leases, the use and evaluation of
sale-leaseback arrangements and the use of tax-deferred exchanges of real property.
