Abstract: This study presents the historical background of title insurance, along with the industry’s current problems, and discusses the literature on title insurance. In general, the literature on title insurance has been in five broad categories: (1) the importance and function of title insurance in real estate transactions; (2) the characteristics of title insurance and the title industry; (3) the historical evolution of title insurance; (4) the performance of the title industry (including loss ratios); and (5) the problems associated with the title industry.
